The outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) not only has a potential impact on our health, but also has wide-ranging social ramifications. Anti-Asian comments, jokes and slurs connected to the coronavirus, which have been reported in the Dutch news, are an indication of the persistence of racism in the Netherlands. The media coverage also has consequences for people with (chronic) illnesses and disabilities.

We can look back at a successful edition of the annual Diversity & Inclusion Symposium on 22 January. The theme 'From diversity to inclusion: strategies for an inclusive curriculum and learning environment' attracted plenty of visitors. See the website for footage of the event and the online magazine. Please note: the video is only accessible to staff and students of Leiden University.

The Access & Support Platform (ASP) is where students and staff with a disability can work to make Leiden University more inclusive and accessible. 

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ECHO Award. Until Friday 29 May 2020 inspiring and talented students with a non-western background can be nominated. Send your nomination to diversiteit@leidenuniv.nl. The winners will be rewarded with a fully organised summer course at UCLA in the United States in 2021.

Sexual violence is widespread, and universities are particularly vulnerable environments. Creating space for open communication reduces the prevalence of sexual violence, says Agathe Cherbit-Langer from the Our Bodies Our Voices Foundation. The added bonus: a better sex life.

Why are the experts whom we prefer to listen to and whose advice we accept without question almost always men? Journalist Ingeborg van der Ven delved into this complex topic and gives her answers in her art project Onbevangen. This focuses on the stories of eight women, including Joanne van der Leun (Dean of Leiden Law School).
