Fathers and mothers bring children up differently. Mothers are more likely to correct children for bad behaviour, for example. This is one of the findings of PhD research by Liesbeth Hallers-Haalboom. PhD defence 7 October.

  Leiden University College in The Hague celebrates its fifth anniversary

Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) is celebrating its fifth anniversary. This English-language programme with on-campus teaching for excellent students has proved to be a great success. On Saturday 10 October, the LUC celebrated in Diligentia Theatre in The Hague with numerous speakers, including Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

  King and Queen consult China experts in Leiden

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima attended a meeting at Leiden University on 1 October to prepare for their state visit to China. China experts informed them about such topics as the image that Chinese people have of the Netherlands.

  Anatomically modern humans reached China well before settling Europe

In Nature researchers at Leiden University and Utrecht University show how 47 teeth from Southern China indicate that anatomically modern man was present at least 80,000 years  ago in the region.  This is 40,000 years earlier than in Europe.

On Friday 2 October journalist Sander van Hoorn started his lecture series ‘The Middle East doesn't exist’, which was organised by the Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (LUCIS). ‘If all goes well, people will understand the Middle East that bit less after my lectures.’

  Solar telescope officially unveiled in Old Observatory

After nearly 70 years, the Leiden Observatory has a new telescope. A crowdfunding action in March brought in the 20,000 euros required to build a solar telescope. On 19 September Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker officiated at the opening.
