Together with four other Dutch Universities Leiden University is included in the Top 100 of the Reputation Rankings of Times Higher Education Magazine. Leiden is the only one of the five universities to have performed better than last year.

  VICI winner Cwiertka: ‘I am contrary by nature’
Katarzyna Cwiertka, Leiden Professor of Modern Japan Studies, was already the recipient of a VENI and a VIDI grant. Now she has also been granted a VICI, worth 1.5 million euro, for her research project Garbage Matters: A Comparative History of Waste in East Asia . ‘I want to do something that hasn’t been done before.’

  Growing a fragment of human heart tissue with a major EU grant
Professor Christine Mummery has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euro. She will use the grant to finance research into how human heart cells are made and will also be trying to grow a fragment of human heart.
