Leiden research generates
four times the value for society
What
are the benefits of scientific research for the Dutch
economy? Leiden University and the Leiden University
Medical Center were keen to know the answer,
and commissioned a report on the economic impact of their
research and knowledge exploitation. Conclusion: every
euro invested in scientific research in Leiden is paid
back four times over.

How
do you integrate minorities into a society, and what kind of
influence does this have on the collective identity? These
questions may seem modern, but they have been relevant for a
long time. The new Eurasian Empires research group studies how
integration and formation of identity took place in the
Eurasian dynasties of 1300 to 1800.

Shedding light on the dark
side of the universe
It
must be there. We just cannot see it: mysterious dark matter
and dark energy in the universe. Henk Hoekstra is one of the
many cosmologists who would love to know what exactly these
substances consist of. He has received a European research
grant of EUR 1.3 million to find out.
