Pride: ‘It's great that there's a club where you don't
feel different!’ |

Fifty years ago a group of students started the
Leiden Student Working Group on LGBT. Today students can
contact Leiden University Pride and for staff there is the
LGBTQ+ Core Network.

Column by Diversity Officer Isabel
Hoving
And how is it getting along, that diversity policy of
yours?
It’s a great question, thank you for asking it, but I’m
sorry, it’s almost impossible to answer. After more than four
years we can at least say that we truly have made quite a lot
of progress. So much that we couldn’t even name it
all.

How students launched the Leiden LGBT movement
50 years ago
Four
students founded the Leiden Student Working Group on
Homosexuality on the day of the Dies Natalis in 1968. This was
to be the start of the LBGT+ movement in Leiden, which
celebrated its 50-year anniversary this year. What has been
achieved and what is the status of emancipation
today?

Lectures on diversity and inclusion
This year the Diversity Office will organise several
lectures on diversity and inclusion in cooperation with the
different faculties at Leiden University. Our first lecture,
Inclusive Leadership: how to
maximise diverse talent, will be on 13 March
in the Wijnhaven Building in The Hague. We have invited
international speakers from across the globe to share with us
their ideas on leadership, how to create an inclusive
organisation and how to maximise the diverse talents of
all.

Networks started up
A range of different networks has been started up to think
about how our university can be more inclusive for all
staff and students. Sophia Women’s Network for
female scientists was launched last year and an LGBT+
network for staff and students also saw the light in
2017. Networks for bicultural/international staff and for
students and staff with disabilities are in the process
of being set up. For more information, please mail to diversiteit@leidenuniv.nl.
