In 2017, Leiden historians Gert Oostindie and Karwan Fatah-Black of Leiden University, published the book Sporen van de Slavernij in Leiden (Traces of Slavery in Leiden). Based on this publication, Mapping Slavery in Leiden was created: an initiative to place markers at locations linked to the city's slavery past.
