Column by Aya Ezawa, Diversity Officer at
Leiden University I have recently been
appointed as the new Diversity Officer at Leiden
University. I feel honoured to follow in the footsteps of
Isabel Hoving, who became the first Diversity Officer at the
University in 2014 and devoted so much effort and passion to
the role.

STAR kick-off event: the importance of
inclusive education
The
kick-off event for Safe Space to Talk about Race
(STAR) on 17 April was a great
success. The focus was on the need for a safe
space for students of colour at Leiden University. The two
keynote speakers, Aminata Cairo (Professor of Inclusive
Education at The Hague University of Applied Sciences) and
Isabel Hoving (the former Diversity Officer at Leiden
University), talked about the importance of inclusive
education. STAR is one of the selected projects
of the Students4Students campaign. It aims to create spaces in
and around Leiden University in which the topics of race,
racism and heritage-related matters can be freely discussed.
It plans to do this by providing education and other
events, safer spaces and peer-to-peer support. |

POPcorner: helping make the University more
inclusive
One
of the ambitions of the Learning@LeidenUniversity vision on
teaching and learning is to foster an international and
inclusive educational community in which everyone feels
welcome, regardless of religion, sex, sexual orientation or
cultural background. One student service that promotes
inclusion is POPcorner. What is it and how is it helping to
make the University more inclusive?

Van Bergen Prize winner Archery Attack has
growth potential
Dutch and international students brandishing bows
and arrows fire at each other on the fields of the University
Sports Centre on 11 May. This is the aim – not the shooting
each other, but the act of getting together.

Female professors from the present and the
future
Role
models are key to inspiring the next generation. Fifteen
female professors therefore celebrated International Women's
Day with girls aged between 12 and 16. Because although the
number of women at the (academic) top is increasing, we're not
there yet.
