Diversity & Inclusion Symposium January 2021 |
|
This year’s D&I Symposium will be hosted by the Faculty of Science. What does inclusive teaching mean – and how can this be applied to subjects such as physics? What measures can translate the ambition of more diversity in all positions, leadership positions in particular, into actual chance?
We are honoured to welcome Ijeoma Uchegbu (University College London), Kerstin Perez (MIT) and Edray Goins (Pomona College) as keynote speakers to help us address these questions.

Column by Aya Ezawa, Diversity Officer at Leiden University
Online environments have become a dominant place for contact, exchange and community. They create new opportunities as they can bridge space and distance. But as digital platforms have become central to our community life, what we say and the tone we set also makes and breaks our community.
From now on these columns will be published on the Leiden Inclusion Blog.

Call Me By My Name |
|
Names are an important part of our identity, and are increasingly visible in today’s online environments. It is very important to transgender people that we use the right title, name and pronoun to refer to them. ‘Sam’ explains what it means for a non-binary transgender person to be misgendered or misnamed.

Implicit bias training |
|
The Diversity & Inclusion Expertise Office is offering implicit bias training in collaboration with Human Centric.
Implicit bias describes the attitudes or associations we hold about individuals or groups of people. This training provides insight into how implicit bias can influence your understanding of others and the decisions you make in the context of your work. The programme also helps you develop techniques to counteract the effects of these biases in selection procedures and in interaction with your colleagues.

Online dialogue: ‘What’s Up With Sinterklaas?’ |
|
How can we make Sinterklaas inclusive as a national holiday? And what does this mean for our University community and Dutch society as a whole?
These questions were the focus of the first edition of ‘Come Talk to Us’, a series of online dialogues organised by the Diversity & Inclusion Expertise Office together with study associations and student networks.
