‘Our world’: 2012 Yearbook

There are two ways of interpreting the title of the Yearbook about Leiden University in 2012, ‘Our world’: as the world of the university and the wider world around us. The Yearbook shows how the wider world in all its breadth, depth and abundance is reflected in the world of Leiden University.

Many discoveries

You can browse through the 2012 Yearbook and read about the many discoveries made in Leiden that really do benefit the world. These vary from fundamental research into the causes of cancer to practical applications such as a skin monitor app that tells you whether that strange spot on your arm is malignant.

Trends and current affairs

The Yearbook also devotes much attention to what is going on in the world. This means themes such as globalisation: more foreign students and staff are coming to Leiden and our people are travelling to all corners of the globe. And networks: just as our society has become a network society, so too has the University evolved into a network university with many links at home and abroad. And current affairs: the hot topics of the last year are covered, such as North Korea, and child abuse. Leiden University has even developed a new minor on the latter.

A pat on the back

Is it the done thing to give oneself a pat on the back? Not really, but if we read between the lines there are plenty of impressive results in the Yearbook. It is becoming standard practice for researchers to have to compete for research funding, with the best research proposals winning, in both the Netherlands and Europe. Leiden University manages to secure a healthy amount of this funding: above average, in fact. We again had a Spinoza Prize winner in 2012, and the University is also climbing the rankings.

Personal perspective

The personal perspective can be seen in the interviews with staff and students with ‘two souls’: university lecturer and writer; student and entrepreneur; professor and physician.
