On page 488 Huygens explains that some famous French Mathematicians, and not he, were the first to explore this line of work. However because of their secrecy with regard as to how they solved various problems he had to reinvent their solutions. He regards the similarity between their and his results as indicative of his succes in emulating their approach and announces the (now) famous last five problems as an exercise and a pas-time to the reader.

FRANCISCUS van SCHOOTEN

Mijn Heer,
sijn vernuft ende arbeyt in 't licht gevende, onder-anderen

ad

FRANC. SCHOOTENIUM

Cæterum illi, difficillimis quibusque quæstionibus se invicem exercere soliti, methodum suam quisque occultam retinuere, adeo ut a primis elementis universam hanc materiam evolvere mihi necesse fuerit. Quamobrem ignoro etiamnum an eodem mecum principio illi utantur; at in resolvendis Problematis pulchre nobis sæpenumero expertus sum. Vale.

narium jacerere contendat, incertum quidem an vincet;
cedere cupiat, quo pretio me eam ipsi vendere aequum sit. Atque
hinc innumerae quæstiones exoriri possunt inter duos, tres, pluresve

An Exact

M E T H O D

For SOLVING the

Hazards of Game

ALthough the Events of Games, which Fortune solely governs, are uncertain, yet it may be certainly determin'd, how much one is more ready to lose than gain. For Example, If one should wager, at the first Throw with one Dye, to throw Six, it's an [2] accident if he gains or not, but by how much it's more probable he will lose or gain, is really determin'd by the nature of the thing, and capable of a strict calculation. So likewise, if I should play with another on this condition, that the Victory should be to the Three first Games and I had gain'd one already, it is still uncertain who shall first gain the third; yet by demonstrative reasoning I can estimate both the Value of his Expectation and mine, and consequently (if we agree to leave the Game unperfect) determin how great a share of the Stakes belong to my and how much to my Play-fellow;[3] or if any were desirous to take my Place, at what rate I ought to sell it. Hence may arise innumerable Queries among two, three, or more Gamesters: and since the Calculation of these things is a little out of the common road, and can oft-times be applyd to good purpose; I shall briefly here shew how it is to be done, and afterwards explain those things that belong properly to Dice.

In both cases I shall make use of this Principle Ones Hazard or Expectation to gain any thing, is worth so much, as, if he had it, he could purchase the like Hazard or Expectation again in a just and equal Game.

[4] For Example, if one, without my knowledge, should hide in one Hand 7 Shillings and in his other 3, and put it to my Choice which Hand I would take, I say, this is as much worth to me as if he should give me 5 Shillings; because, if I have 5 Shillings I can purchase as good a Chance again, and that in a fair and just Game.

1

The Value of Chances

ALTHOUGH in Games depending entirely upon Fortune, the Success is always
uncertain; yet it may be exactly determin'd at the same time, how much more
likely one is to win than lose. As, if any one shou'd lay that he wou'd
throw the Number Six with a single Die the first throw, it is indeed
uncertain whether he will win or lose; but how much more probability there
is that he shou'd lose than win, is presently determin'd, and easily calculated.
So likewise, if I agree with another to play the first Three Games for a
certain Stake, and I have won one of my Three, it is yet uncertain which of
us shall first get his third Game; but the Value of my Expectation and his
likewise may be exactly discover'd; and consequently it may be determin'd,
if we shou'd both agree to give over play, and leave the remaining Games
unfinish'd, how much more of the Stake comes to my Share than his;
[2] or, if another desired to purchase my Place and Chance, how much I might
just sell it for. And from hence an infinite Number of Questions may arise
between two, three, four, or more Gamesters: The satisfying of which being
a thing neither vulgar nor useless, I shall here demonstrate in few Words,
the Method of doing it; and then likewise explain particularly the Chances
that belong more properly to Dice.

POSTULAT

AS a Foundation to the following Proposition, I shall take Leave to
lay down this Self-evident Truth: That my Chance or Expectation
to win any thing is worth just such a Sum, as wou'd procure me in the same
Chance and Expectation at a fair Lay
. As for Example, if any one shou'd put
3 Shillings in one Hand, without letting me know which, and 7 in the other,
and give me Choice of either of them; I say, it is the same thing as if he
shou'd give me 5 Shillings; because with 5 Shillings I can, at a fair Lay,
procure the same even Chance or Expectation to win 3 or 7 Shillings.
