ULCN and your U-account

ULCN
Leiden University has its own community network, viz. ULCN (University Leiden Community Network).

U-account
As a student, you have access to this network with your U-account. The U-account consists of a user name and a password. The U-account is given to the student once he/she is registered at the university. The use of ULCN with your U-account is bound by certain conditions.

Access

Which computers and facilities can I access with my U-account?
The U-account gives you access to the computers at the different faculties, Plexus and the University Library. Also, it provides you with access to all the IT-related services offered by ULCN. Not only can you enter the ULCN network via the computer facilities provided by the university, but you can also log in at home, at internet café's, etc.

ULCN services

All services described below can be found via the ULCN pages. In the menu on the left-hand side you can find more information on the services available. On the right-hand side you can log in using your user name and password (the so-called U-account).

U-mail
The U-account is accompanied by your personal U-mailbox. This mailbox with a storage of 50 MB can be used as a personal mail address: you can send and receive e-mail and forward it to another e-mail server. It provides the same services as commercial standard e-mail providers. It is also used by the University to send you study-related information. It is very important to check your U-mail regularly!

U-Twist
U-Twist gives you access to your examination results. Here you can also register, or cancel registrations for exams, courses and workgroups. However, if you are an exchange student, this does not mean that you are officially enrolled in the course.

Blackboard
Online access to course materials placed by the lecturers is gained via Blackboard. Blackboard is a digital learning environment, which facilitates communication between lecturers and students. You can enroll in courses. (However, if you are an exchange student, this does not mean that you are officially enrolled in the course.) You can take part in the discussion forum, and plan your courses with the task manager and the calendar available. Important course announcements can be placed on Blackboard by the lecturers.

Digital Library
Contains an overview and gives access to the bibliographic databases, full-text sources and electronical journals (e-journals) owned by the University.

U-CAT (University Catalogue)
This is the central catalogue of Leiden University's libraries. Search this catalogue for publications located in different libraries throughout the University.

Computers, printers & photocopiers

Computer rooms
Students can make use of the computer facilities provided by the University. The opening hours
of these rooms vary. At most faculties, the computer rooms are available from Mondays to Fridays and in the evenings. At some faculties, the Plexus Student Centre and the University Library, it is even possible to use the computer facilities during the weekends. The capacity of computers varies.

Computers
The computers contain standard Microsoft Office (version 98 or higher) with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and FrontPage. In general, supporting software like Acrobat Reader and Windows Media Player is available on the computers.
All computers (except for some at the University Library) have USB-portals (easy when using a memory stick) and a disk drive. Not all the computers are provided with a CD Rom drive.

Laptops and wireless internet
You can bring your own laptop to most computer rooms. You can connect your laptop to the University Network and the Internet at most faculties and Plexus. At Plexus and certain faculties, e.g. the Faculty of Science, wireless internet is available as well.

Printers and photocopiers
Both for printing and copying documents, you need a copy card. Copy cards are available from the copy card machines in the various university buildings.
