This symposium is an opportunity for staff and students of Leiden University to discuss the contribution that diversity and inclusivity can make to research and education, and to the university as an organisation. Inspiring speakers from at home and abroad will share their views with the participants. Everybody interested in this topic is welcome to attend.

Leiden University, in 67th position, is the highest ranking Dutch University in the Times Higher Education Ranking (THE) again this year. The THE Ranking presents the world’s top 200 universities based on indicators related to teaching, research and innovation.

  New free online course on ‘Terrorism and Counterterrorism’
The entire world can follow the lectures given by Edwin Bakker, Leiden Professor of Terrorism and Counterterrorism. Is terrorism becoming more deadly? Is deradicalisation possible? These are questions that Bakker wants to address in his Massive Open Online Course, which is accessible to everyone.

  Major European subsidy for virtual chemistry lab
Professor of Theoretical Chemistry Geert-Jan Kroes has been awarded a prestigious Advanced Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). The subsidy of 2.5 million euros will allow Kroes to model precisely how gas molecules react on metal surfaces. This fundamental knowledge will make it possible to produce many chemical substances more efficiently.

  Substantial hereditary differences in gene activity
The genetic differences at RNA level between humans are surprisingly substantial, according a consortium of researchers, from the LUMC and other medical centres, who recently published an article in Nature. These RNA differences go some way to explaining why one person is susceptible to certain diseases while another is not.
