The book sketches the colonisation of Korea by Japan, through the medium of food.

  EUR 15 million for excellent archaeological research into the colonisation of the Americas
Corinne Hofman (Professor in Caribbean Archaeology) has been awarded 15 million euro by the EU for her archaeological research on the colonisation of the Americas. She will lead the ‘NEXUS 1492’ project together with colleagues Davies (VU), Brandes (Konstanz) and Willems (Leiden).

  Glasses with live subtitles
Glasses for the deaf and the hard of hearing. It sounds strange, but it is currently in full development. These glasses, called SpraakZien (SpeechView), provide the wearer with live subtitles during a conversation, while allowing for continued eye-contact between the speakers. Four Leiden students of Linguistics are carrying out experiments with the glasses.

  Synergy funding for Delft-Leiden quantum computer workshop
Leiden nano-physicist Carlo Beenakker is one of a trio of scientists from Delft and Leiden who have been awarded EUR 15 million of European funding to set up a lab and get the quantum computer off the ground. The Majorana particle is going to help them here.

  Cleveringa lecture by Timothy Snyder double hommage to Cleveringa
American historian Timothy Snyder balanced respectfully between extremes in his Cleveringa lecture on Monday 26 November: the extremes of large-scale historical explanation and absolute individualisation of the 14 million victims of Hitler and Stalin in Eastern Europe. He paid hommage to Cleveringa from both extremes.
