  Opening of The Hague Institute for Global Justice
The Hague Institute for Global Justice, in which Leiden University is involved, was officially opened in the Ridderzaal in The Hague on Friday 10 June. The aim of the institute, which is starting with a grant of more than 17 million euros, is to become a leading institute in the field of peace and law. Madeleine Albright, the former United States Secretary of State, is the chair of the Advisory Board.

  Penrose: seeking the limits of quantum
World-famous mathematician and physicist Sir Roger Penrose is Lorentz Professor 2011 at Leiden University. But his links with Leiden go back much further than this. Together with Leiden experimental physicists Dirk Bouwmeester and Tjerk Oosterkamp he is seeking the limits of quantum mechanics.

In the Leiden Family Lab, three generations from the same family are put under the scrutiny. Biologists, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and educators are applying their knowledge and skills to study social anxiety, family abuse and obesity.

  Moroccan-Dutch youths display very Dutch emotions
Dutch youths of Moroccan origin express their anger in the same way as native Dutch teenagers. This ‘emotional integration’ applies equally to Moroccan-Dutch youths who identify with Dutch culture and to those whose primary connection is with the culture of their parents.

  Young star fires off extremely rapid water molecules
A team including Leiden astronomers has observed water molecules moving away from a young, sun-like star at a speed of more than 200,000 km per hour. This is 80 times as fast as a bullet fired from an AK-47 weapon.

  Tibetan unravels myth about founder of religion
Kalsang Gurung is the first Tibetan to obtain his PhD in Leiden. He carried out research into the accounts of Shenrab Miwo, the founder of the Bön religion. Gurung demonstrates that these accounts do not reflect historical reality. PhD defence: 31 May.
