Contrary to the popular impression that we are living in extraordinarily violent times, rates of violence at all levels have been declining over the course of history. Professor Steven Pinker, psychologist at Harvard University (brain and cognition) will explore the possible causes of this decline. Dr Rivke Jaffe, Leiden University (urban anthropology and sociology), first speaker of the evening, will talk about ‘Police, security guards, criminals: Unconventional security assemblages’. The lectures will be followed by drinks.
Registration is required.
The Niko Tinbergen lecture is a yearly event in honour of Nobel prizewinner and ethologist Niko Tinbergen (1907-1988). The lecture is organised by Leiden University in co-operation with NRC Handelsblad, NWO, Naturalis, Museum Boerhaave and Brill publishing house. The lecture follows the theme of evolution.
