The second lecture in the Studium Generale series ‘Origin Obsession’ focuses on the 18th century interest in art as testimony.
It is in the 18th century that images and art were increasingly regarded as expressions of human history and as material testimonies of the very notion of human origins. In this connection, the concept and rhetoric of the “primitive” gave rise to a new order of vision and a new notion of art and entailed a new cultural hierarchy and world view.
This lecture traces this development from the 18th century to modern revisions and critiques of “primitivism” in the context of 20th century avant-garde art.

Dr. Assimina Kaniari (DPhil, Oxford)is a lecturer in the History and Theory of Art at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
